What is DAVAR3:
DAVAR3 is a continuation of the previous
Davar version 2.4. In summer 2004, development of D3 was started, from
scratch. In this version, the functionality was extended to provide a
user friendly tool for Scripture studies with big focus to the original
languages.
Most old-good functions from Davar 2.4 will be kept and many new will
be added. Because D3 is now pretty stable and mature program, we offer
it as main product.

Preview of actual Davar3 version. Note: image quality is reduced to 256 colors only

Important: it is supposed that in each inserted path exist directory \data , directories \audio and \pictures can be also presented.
When program starts, first test folders and files in path, where was started
(so it is not necessary to add that path into list), then paths in
order of list. If find files with same name, use first occurrence.
This
means, that you can use "library" burned on CD/DVD media. New versions
of modules can be placed in \data subdirectory where is executable file
and will be prefered before other files with same name.
Check "Add CD/DVD drives automatically to the end of paths":
When this is checked (recommended), then program keeps CD/DVD media in
paths automatically. This is also default setting after installation.
Each start of program, CD/DVD media are checked and found module
files are used.

- program can play MP3 files generally by two ways: 1) by direct open of MP3 file 2) by open of Audio Index file (AIX). When this option is checked, then direct open of MP3 file will start playing immediatelly.
Delete temporary file after merge to AIX file If
you perform indexing of MP3 files using "Audio indexing tool" then
program create temporary text file with positions in MP3 files versus
scripture references. When indexing is done, program merge that
temporary file with main AIX file (that can be done manually in
text editor too). When this option is checked, temporary file is
deleted after merge. Otherwise, file is overwritten on the start of
next indexing session.
Reverse / Forward time interval [sec] Interval for fast move forward/backward when playing directly opened MP3 file.
Audio timer [ms], buffer size for playing [bytes] and buffer size for indexing [bytes] On slow PC, you can change values for better performance of playing. In other cases, it is not recommended to change this values!
Enable picture halftone quality This
option is enabled from Windows2000 only. If checked, pictures are
displayed using Windows API functions with halftones in better quality.
Beep at 100% zoom Zoom in/out can be also performed by wheel of mouse. If this option is checked, then 1:1 picture size is signed by beep.
Topmost window of Picture Browser If checked, picture window is above all windows. Available also from toolbar menu.
Dialog-like style of Picture Browser window If checked, picture window has style like window toolbar dialog and is not presented in task manager bar in bottom.
When new picture is open, fit Determine, how fit each new opened picture to existing pisture browser window.
Context Tips - Context Tips options
Show context tips If checked, context tips are enabled. On VERY slow PC, it can be good to disable context tips. Available also from toolbar menu.
Show reference in context tips Show Strong # in context tips Show Greek morphology in context tips You can specify, which kind of information is displayed in context tip.
Thick frame of context tip If checked, context tip window has thick frame.
Tip width and tip height Adjust size of context tip window to fit your display resolution.
Tip background color Background of tip - to change color, just click to
colored rectangle.
Context tip label Some attributes of contex tip text, mostly for reference text from book.
Show tags in tip Text
in context tip depends on selected source for tips (see items
below). If you select tagged text of book or lexicon, then you can
select if tags are displayed, not displayed or displayed as is set for
book, where you point. Default settings is no tags - for speed reasons.
Note: if you display tags in
context tips, pointing of mouse or click to tag (e.g. Strong# tag or
reference) in tip window has no effect.
Source files for tips Select files (by buttons) as sources for context tip for preview (book, lexicon and dictionary). Can be unspecified. Remember: file MUST be opened in window, to display informations in context tip!
If file is not opened, let program to use some opened file as source for context tip If
checked, and source file for context tip is not opened (or specified),
then program try to use some else available file for tip. If this cannot be performed, then context tip contains message: *** File not found***
Other settings - Other program settings
Check for updates when program starts If
you are connected to internet, select time interval for updates
checking. When program starts, connect to Davar3 web and get
informations about program updates and new modules. If you select check for every day option, check is performed only once/day, even when start program more often. You can invoke check for updates from manually: Help | Perform check for updates
2) Checking for updates tool
We plan to release and update many new books, lexicons and dictionaries modules. If you are connected to internet, check for updates
is a good way to be informed about latest modules and program
updates. While web page "news" section is updated with main
releases only, this tool is able to inform you about each, even small
updates. As mentioned in Options section above, just select
frequency of checking for updates. If program find new releases, small
popup window will show basic informations about released files and
you will decide if program will invoke web browser, which will be
redirected to download section of Davar web. You can download files
according your decision and install it manually. Total amount of
transferred data at check procedure is less than 32 kB, so it is very
fast.
DISCLAIMER:
Davar3
does NOT send any informations about user to internet. Check for
updates first get small text file from program homepage, compare date
in PC with date of last check (stored in davar.cfg) and dates of
actualizations in retrieved file. After evaluation, selected part
of retrieved text file is displayed in information window. |
3) Davar3 beta1 is fast... and sometimes is VERY FAST!
Davar3
beta1 is build without debugging informations and optimized for speed
(in OpenWatcom 1.6). It means that speed of execution was greatly
improved. While search in book was speed up about 2 times, search in
lexicon almost 20 times! See comparison search in Davar3 alpha5 and
Davar3 beta1:
| Davar3 alpha5 [sec] | Davar3 beta1 [sec] | | Search for all words "King Solomon prophet Nathan" in entire KJV+ | 1.03 | 0.59 | | Search for any word "King Solomon prophet Nathan" in entire KJV+ | 2.36 | 1.3 | | Search for Hebrew word "Che-Se-D" in entire DBD lexicon | 5.25 | 0.28 | | Search for English word "wife" in entire DBD lexicon | 5.19 | 0.22 | | Search for English word "iron" in entire WRUDplain (Webster) lexicon | 81.8 | 4.77 |
Finished
features in Davar3 ALPHA5:

1) Picture browser
Picture browser is stand-alone window (or dialog) where picture
files can be displayed. For example maps, charts, diagrams, illustrations
and photos. All pictures must be placed in \picture subfolder. Except picture files, only copyright.nfo file can be in this folder (if you are interested, open this file in editor for more info).
You can select picture from library tree on left side of
main window (double click). Similarly as books and other data,
pictures can be divided to nested folders (up to 9 levels). D3A5 has
included predefined picture-tree structure in file library.cfg. Note: library.cfg
keeps information about ALL available pictures for Davar3. Installation
file has just small sample of pictures, to keep installation small. You
can download zipped all pictures from download section and unzip
content of package to \picture folder.
When picture is displayed, you can use button from toolbar
(zoom in/out, fit all window/height/width, make picture topmost). Arrow
buttons (previous/next picture) will work for pictures in actual
"folder". Wheel of mouse zoom picture in predefined
steps, left button can "drag" picture (if it's size is bigger than
size of window) and move. Context menu of picture
(right click) has same commands. There is also direct selection of zoom
(10 - 400%) and copyright info about actual picture (if presented in
copyright.nfo in \picture folder).
Note: Davar3 uses excellent FreeImage.dll
- free, open source graphics library. It can handle all common bitmap
file formats (BMP, GIF, PNG, JPG, PSD, TIFF, .... ). You can add own
files to \picture folder for use in Davar3.
If you know about interesting source of pictures for Davar, please contact us.
2) Context tip window
Context tip window is a variant of "tooltip" window. It can help you to get really quick informations about text, you are study. When point to text in book or lexicon, it will quickly display:
- Content of reference. If text contains e.g. tag of reference "Gen 1:1", this verse is displayed.
- Hebrew and Greek strongs.
If you have opened lexicons with Greek / Hebrew Strongs info
(stripd_gr.lex, stripd_he.lex, str_he.lex or str_gr.lex), then pointing
to any Strong# will display informations.
- Greek morphology. If you point to greek word AND it contains morphology tags, then popup window shows decoded morphology informations.

Note:
preferred filename of book for preview in context tip is in davar.cfg
in option: "ContextTipBookFilename". There is option
"ContextTipSubstitute" - if set to 0, only specified file can be used
for preview (must be open). If set to 1, then is still preferred, but
if cannot be reference displayed (file not opened or reference is not
in book), then Davar3 will try to find any book (latin based only),
which can be used for preview. Preferred lexicons for Hebrew/Greek are in options "ContextTipLexHEFilename" and "ContextTipLexGRFilename", respectively. On
slower PC, context tips can take serious part of CPU time - there is
button "TIP" in toolbar which will context tips enable/disable. If you hold Ctrl key, tip window will be "frozen". In future version of Davar3, configuration will be performed via "Options" dialog.
3) Watch clipboard
If you use Davar dictionaries and lexicons as tool for
translations, this function save you some time. If activated, Davar
watch content of clipboard and if is changed, text is placed to all
opened dictionaries and lexicons.
4) Davar3 new localizations:
Added Polish
(thanks to Jerzy Gurycz
), Italian and French (thanks to Mario Valente) localization files. Davar3 is now localised to 9 languages.
Your help with new localizations is welcome - please contact us if you decide to translate Davar3.
5) Many bugs were fixed. Library tree window color/gray folders, rebar
bands are better positioned, fixed RTF tags in info windows, english
text in about dialog, NBK06 text (reported by user), change language of
localization will also translate all tree types of data, anoying
autoscroll in RTF window of lexicon when context tip was
displayed, BHS qere words caused bad detection of end of verse when module were prepared ....and many other. Thanks all who reported problems.
Finished
features in Davar3 ALPHA4:

1) Export of books, lexicons and dictionaries to file
This modal dialog is an export tool for Davar files into printable
format. Here follows the description parts of this dialog.
Type of export:
Select first, whether to export book, lexicon or dictionary. For
dictionary, you can check "Opposite" - export mode that will be sorted
according to words of opposite direction.
File and range of export:
According to previous option, you can select the file for export.
Lexicons and dictionaries are always exported as All, and for books you
can select the range of export or export only verses which are
presented in
actual
verse list.
Format of exported data:
here can be selected TEXT or UNICODE TEXT or RTF format of exported data.
Plain txt source
option exports file to special format, where tags are presented and which is easy to
parse and convert to any other format (e.g. using
sed
converter). Plain source file format description will be available in
final Davar3 version, together with
MDK
(
M
odule
D
evelopment
K
it) - package of tools for conversion of texts for Davar. In MDK, examples
of conversions of some modules, examples of
sed
scripts and c sources of converters will be available.
mDavar dictionary
option is available only for dictionaries with Hebrew - export to MDD
file for J2ME version mDavar program. In this case, select *.tab file
of sorting no-Hebrew language of exported dictionary.
Export tags:
If file (book or lexicon) contains tagged text (Strong's, notes,
variants, references, morphology,...) then here can select which tags
will be exported - all / none / or those, which user selected as
visible in the opened book window.
Mark tags
- for TXT / UNICODE exports - tags can be marked by some special
characters (#,@,*,... etc) to distinguish tags in plain text. Usefull
in cases, where formatting of text is not possible.
Hebrew / Greek coding:
Internally, Davar3 uses non standard coding Hebrew/Greek. If
exported text (RTF, TXT) is displayed by Davar fonts (HebrewUniversal
and GreekUniversal) then all is working. Options to convert Hebrew and
Greek to standard Win1255 and Win1253 encoding allows to use many
standard fonts for print. For RTF exports in Win1255 or Win1253
- you can select font which will be referenced in RTF file in "RTF font
options part" Note: RTF export of Hebrew in Davar encoding is
not directed Right2Left, while if coded in Win1255, it has true R2L
direction and can be processed in editor with R2L capabilities.
Styles of book export:
Formatting of text and references can be done many ways, you can
select one of seven predefined styles. Some of them are good for
quotation of small or big parts of texts. Other styles can be used for
processing of exported texts.
Short references
check - abbreviations of book names will be used in references.
Note: Styles window preview is
not
WYSIWYG preview.
Full path to exported file or export to clipboard
are mutual exclusive options - select file to export or check clipboard.
Note: export to clipboard works now only for books.
2) Export to Unicode and distributed free fonts for print
Exported files can be easily printed from word processor. There are no problems with Latin-based texts or Greek.
For Hebrew it is good choice to export in Win1255 to TXT or RTF or
perform export to Unicode. Obtained text is then in Right2Left
direction.
Tested R2L editors:
OpenOffice 2.0
MS Word 2002 (Office XP)
AbiWord
- sometimes very slow for RTF import
BabelPad
- excellent free Unicode editor with many features - highly recommended (
url
)
This version Davar3 include free Hebrew fonts - for nice print results.
Here are preview of BHS text as was exported to Unicode and then opened
in BabelPad. Reference font was set to Arial, Hebrew text was set to
Arial, Ezra SIL and SBL Hebrew:
Arial
Ezra SIL
SBL Hebrew
Note: Ezra SIL font must be included as whole package (~ 3MB). If you
wish use this font, unpack TTF files first and install. Both fonts
(Ezra SIL and SBL Hebrew) must be distributed free of charge
and used for noncomercial purposes only.
3) Davar3 localizations
Added
Dutch
(thanks to
Esmé J. Smit
) and
Russian
(thanks to
Alexei Nitsenko and Vladimir Marchenko
) localization files. Now, Davar3 is localised to 6 languages.
Your help with new localizations is welcome - please contact us if you decide to translate Davar3.
4) Updated "Tip of the day" dialog
Added button "Previous tip" and length of tip string is not limited to 127 characters.
5) Many bugs were fixed - thanks all testers for reports!
Finished
features in Davar3 ALPHA3:

1) Verse list
manager.
This
resizable nonmodal dialog helps
you to organize Scripture verses in two panels (Main and Secondary).
Each list has two parts - reference and preview. You can select one of
the opened books as source for preview (English, Greek, Hebrew etc.).
If preview book is closed or switched, preview is refreshed to other
book when possible. Dialog is always topmost though you can turn
visibility on/off from menu and toolbar. You can set position of
"splitter" between main and secondary verse list, width of
"Reference" columns and size of dialog manually by mouse and this
parameters are saved to configuration file.
Number of verses in list and number of selected verses is in [] on the top.
(In example: main list has 8 verses and 1 selected. * means that list was changed and not saved).
Button with ">>>" or "<<<" arrows between lists is
for quick move/copy of selected verses to opposite list. When pressed,
selected verses are MOVED, with Ctrl key pressed, program will COPY
verses.
Each list has a description part (max. 63 characters) and can be saved
and opened. Default extension of file is *.vl. Number of verses is not
limited, and you can work with all Bible (~32 000) verses at very fast
speed. Each reference can be presented in list only once.
Click to verse will synchronize actual book and other books with synchronization set on.
Only one list is active at a time - you can select the "Active list"
radio button with the mouse by clicking it; or just click the verse
list itself.
List verses can be
selected with the mouse. Click the verse for selection. To select
individual verses hold the Ctrl key; To select a range of verses hold
the Shift key (this is a working standard for the view component used
in verse list).
Available commands for verse list:
(the following available commands; can be selected from combo box and applied to
actual
verse[s] after pressing OK button:)
"Delete all verses" -
HINT: another way is to click on actual list and press Ctrl+Del
"Insert range of verses"
"Insert results of search in book"
-
HINT: check option "Insert results of search to list" in search dialog
"Move selected verses"
-
HINT: use ">>>" button to MOVE
"Copy selected verses"
-
HINT: use ">>>" button + Ctrl to COPY
"Delete selected verses"
-
HINT: another way is to select actual verse via radio button and press Del
"Select all verses"
"Invert selection"
"Select common verses"
"Select NOT common verses"
Note:
Keyboard selection using keys arrow up/down and Page Up/Down is
disabled. For virtual list view (which was necessary to use for good
speed) and owner draw features (to correctly display Hebrew and
right-to left direction), keyboard selection was not reliable in some
cases. Available source code examples suffer same problem.
2) Scroll position tip.
When you scroll in book window, small pink window with actual position is displayed.
This will help you to navigate exact position in text. In final
version, this option will be configurable, in present version, mature
users can edit davar.cfg.
3) Davar3 splash screen.
David Holubec was so kind and created nice splash screen for Davar3.
You will see it when program starts for 5 sec. In final version, this
option will be configurable, in present version, mature users can edit
davar.cfg.
4) Many bugs were fixed - thanks all testers for reports!
Finished
features in Davar3 ALPHA2:

1)
Library manager.
This
resizable modal dialog helps
you to organize Davar files into logical "folders". Left
part of dialog shows library tree. Basic types of data folders (
Books, Lexicons, Dictionaries, Audio
) can have up to 10 levels subfolders. For example, Books can be divided
to Hebrew Scripures, Greek Scriptures, English Scriptures, ...etc.
Right part shows files from left folder. You can drag&drop files
from right window to left folders and subfolders if their types are
compatible. Also, you can drag&drop folders in left tree. It is possible create new folders, edit names of folders and delete folders. After you like tree structure, Save to
library.cfg
file. This library tree is then available from left tree window of program and from menu.
Configuration file library.cfg is text file and is possible to edit it
manually in notepad-like editor. Although its format is simple, typos
can cause crash of program - thus manual editing is not recommended. It is important to say, that operations with
folders cannot affect any data files (delete or edit). You just create
tree structure, where program on the start try to fit files, which
find. New files will be placed into "root" of basic types, e.g. in
Books
folder.
2)
Localization files.
In \language folder are stored
*.lng
- text based localization files. It is well commented inside with
instructions for translators. Languages can be switched in runtime, no
restart is needed. In present time, Davar3 is localised into English,
Czech and Potruguese. If you want localize program and create own .lng
file, please contact author of program for more details.
Any help with localization is welcome.
3) Command line navigator.
This is tool for really quick and effective navigation in books. In
toolbar editable-combo just type abbreviation of biblical
book and number of
chapter and verse. "LED" indicator next edit combo will change colors:
dark gray
= text doesn't fit any reference in actual book window,
orange
= hits were found, but more than one and cannot determinate exact reference,
green
= reference found and no need to type more. Enter key will synchronize
actual
book window and all other books window, with synchronization.
Navigator controls entered reference and existence of chapters and verses. Book abbreviations are stored in
.lng
file - translators can select up to 8 best abbreviations characteristic
for each language. Combo navigator keeps history of typed references.
For example, following English strings will work in navigator:
3j 1 5 3j1:9 2ti2-2 2ti2
2.timothy 2:3 re6 Jl,2,2
...e.t.c.
4) Audio features.
From Alpha2 version, Davar3 can play MP3 files, for example narration of texts in books.
There are two ways of using MP3 files:
I) Direct open and playing MP3.
Use menu command Multimedia | Open MP3 audio... to select any file to
play. Enabled multimedia toolbar buttons are: Play, Pause, Stop,
Rev and Forward. In this mode, Davar3 works as common player.
II) Synchronized player with text.
For Scripture studies, there is need to
synchronize
text with MP3 stream. For this purpose, in \audio\ folder are stored
*.aix
files (audio indexes). AIX file is text file, which keeps relations
between references and corresponding MP3 file offsets. Only one
index file can be currently opened.
For example, in Alpha2 version you will find:
\audio\bhs.aix
and also
\audio\bhs\21_ecclesiastes.mp3
bhs.aix is index file for Hebrew bible. Some
parts of Bible are already in file indexed. 21_ecclesiastes.mp3 is audio.
How to play audio:
You can open BHS from Audio tree in the left part of program -
doubleclick. Multimedia toolbar will be enabled. Now, open some
Hebrew Bible text (BHS) and list book
Ecclesiastes
(this is only Hebrew audio available in Davar3Alpha2).
Tip: according feature 3) above, type "ecc" text (without "")
in command line navigator and press Enter. In non-English
localizations, abbreviation can be different.
Now you are in
Ecclesiastes 1:1
If press first button of multimedia toolbar (symbol of speaker)
then program try to play audio of actual verse of actual book. Second button is "Autoplay" function.
It will also set first button to pressed and program try to play
audio and scroll text in windows. Fifth and sixth buttons (rev, ff) will move to previous/next verse of actual book.
Important: it is not recommended during playing audio change actual window, perform search, etc...
Note:
bhs.aix
file keeps indexed following books of Hebrew OT:
Genesis, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Jonah, Malachi
.
MP3 indexing tool
If you know enough Hebrew and wish to help authors speed up
indexing of rest MP3 files, use build up indexing tool and following
way: 1) Backup bhs.aix. Be sure that you have necessary MP3 in \audio\bhs\ folder. For example you want to index:
02_exodus.mp3
2) Open just one book window (Biblia Hebraica text) and bhs.aix from left tree window
3) Click last button in multimedia toolbar - audio data indexing modal
dialog will be displayed. On slow PC, it can take a while, until combo
box is filled by references - please wait. 4) Now select reference, from where you want to
start. In example, we want start from Exodus 1:1. When selected in
combo, book window with Hebrew text is synchronized. 5) FIRST click to big button will start playing
MP3. About 0.2 - 0.5 sec before you expect start of new verse (Exo
1:2), press button again. Window position is updated. Continue just
clicking to button .... good exercise for learning Hebrew :-) 6) When you want to end (MP3 can still play),
just press Save button. Audio is stopped and you will find new
references in combo. Can press Close button or go to point 4)
7) If you click button in bad point, DO NOT PANIC! Just press Save
button, select from combo reference, where MP3 was indexed OK and
go over critical part again.
WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL HELP US TO FINISH INDEXING OF MOST IMPORTANT PARTS OF HEBREW OT. Thanks folks!
5)
Program configuration file.
When program ends, automatically creates davar.cfg file. It is main configuration file, text based.
Name of most items is self-explaining, you can affect program by
editing of this file (only for mature Davar users, bad values can
crash program!). In final version, this file will be created/edited via
Options dialog.
In present time, it is important that program store positions of all
opened windows and positions in books, lexicons and dictionaries.
Program can use more than one default path to \data\ and \audio\ folders where are stored files.
